If you are disappointed with your results or have failed matric there are options available. However, the road to becoming an educator is not always easy. Without a Matric, you cannot study teaching.

You might think that your chances of succeeding are gone if you do not pass your matriculation. This is so because, in South Africa, a Matric Certificate is a valuable credential. You can apply for jobs at entry levels and universities with it.

You have the option of studying education in a TVET college, taking a NATED Educare degree, or studying National Certificate (Vocational) levels with Early Childhood Developments as one of your subjects.

Can I Go To College Without Matric?

Yes, you can go to a college without Matric. You can study through Matric College. There are courses you can study without Matric. These courses are offered through distance learning. This means you study from home, or anywhere you are.

If I Failed Matric Can I Study Teaching

Without a Matric, you cannot become a teacher. You have three options for your education studies: a TVET college education level, a NATED Educare course, or National Certificate (Vocational) levels with Early Childhood Developments as one of your subjects.

However, with the courses you can study at TVET colleges, you could become a Teacher at a crèche, or work at an Early Childhood Development Centre. But you cannot teach in schools. The same goes for NATED qualifications. You could work at a daycare or crèche, but you cannot teach in schools.

To study Teaching in South Africa, what Are The Qualifications?

This depends on the type and level of teaching certification you pursue. There are four ways to pursue a teaching degree:

  • Bachelor of Education (will allow you to be a school Teacher)
  • Postgraduate Certificate in Education (will allow you to be a school Teacher)
  • TVET course in Education/Teaching (will NOT allow you to be a school Teacher)
  • NATED course in Eucare (will NOT allow you to be a school Teacher)
Can a foreigner become a Teach in South Africa
The Council may provisionally register a person employed under a learnership contemplated by the Skills Development Act, of 1998. Foreign educators are registered provisionally to teach in South Africa as recommended by the employer. They must provide proof of legal entry into South Africa and a police clearance.

In South Africa, how long does it take to complete a teaching degree?

This also depends on the degree you are pursuing. The time required to meet each requirement is indicated below.

Qualification Minimum Time
Bachelor of Education Four years
Postgraduate Certificate in Education One year (however, this is after completing a Diploma of three years or a Bachelor’s Degree of four years)
TVET course One year (however, this can depend on whether you are doing NC(V) levels first)
NATED course Three years (This is if you decide to complete the entire NATED Educare Diploma Programme)
