UCT Admission Requirements: How Many Points Do You Need?

The University of Cape Town (UCT) uses a points system based on your National Senior Certificate (NSC) or an equivalent qualification to decide if you qualify for admission. This system looks at your final matric results and, in some cases, specific subject requirements depending on the programme you want to study.

Your Admission Points Score (APS) is calculated from your best six matric subjects, which must include English and any other subjects required by your chosen course, such as Mathematics or Physical Sciences. Each subject mark is converted into points and then added up to form your total APS. The higher your score, the better your chances of getting accepted.

Different programmes have different minimum APS requirements. For example, courses in commerce and science tend to have lower minimum points, while engineering and health sciences usually require higher scores due to their competitive nature. Knowing these requirements helps you focus your studies and plan effectively.

Understanding UCT Admission Points

When applying to the University of Cape Town (UCT), your academic performance in high school is very important. UCT uses a points-based system to measure how well you’ve done in your final matric exams or an equivalent qualification. This system helps determine if you qualify for the course you are applying for.
Your scores are converted into what is known as the Admission Points Score (APS) or Minimum Admission Point Score (MAPS).

UCT calculates this by adding up the marks from your six best subjects, not including Life Orientation. If the course you are applying for has specific subject requirements, like Mathematics or Physical Sciences, those subjects must be included in the calculation.

Each programme has a different minimum score requirement. Meeting or exceeding the required points improves your chances of being accepted. It is a good idea to check the specific entry requirements for the course you want to study.

How to Determine Your Admissions Points Score for UCT

Based on the percentages gained on the preliminary and final National Senior Certificate exams, a score for admission will be issued.

When assessing admission, a total of six subjects, excluding Life Orientation, as well as English and any other subjects that might be required for the specific programme are taken into account. For example, we will sum the scores for English, math, physics, and the next three best subjects (aside from life orientation) to reach the NSC score towards the APS for a programme where math and physics are required.

Calculating the Admission Points Score (APS)

The percentages you achieve in your National Senior Certificate exams (both preliminary and final) are directly used as your admission scores. When calculating your APS, the scores from six subjects are added together. These must include English and any other subjects required for your chosen program, but exclude Life Orientation.

For example, if the program requires Mathematics and Physical Sciences, your APS will be calculated by adding the scores from English, Mathematics, Physical Sciences, and your next best three subjects, excluding Life Orientation. Keep in mind that any subject result below 40% does not contribute to your APS.

How Is APS Calculated for UCT?

UCT calculates your APS by adding the points from your top six matric subjects. These include English, Mathematics (if required), and other subjects relevant to your chosen programme. Below is how it works:

  • Your final percentage in each subject is converted into a point score.
  • The higher your mark, the more points you earn.
  • Life Orientation is not included in the calculation.

Points are awarded as follows:

  • 80–100% = 7 points
  • 70–79% = 6 points
  • 60–69% = 5 points
  • 50–59% = 4 points
  • 40–49% = 3 points
  • 30–39% = 2 points
  • 0–29% = 1 point
