  • Admission Requirements to UJ

These are the admission requirements for applying for a Primary Health Care Course at UJ:

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing:

  • Regulation R.174 or R425.
  • Diploma in Nursing (R.171) with an Advanced Diploma in Midwifery (R.1497).

4-Year Diploma in Nursing and Midwifery (Regulation 45, 22 February 1985, as amended).

2-Year Diploma (Bridging course) for registration as a General or Psychiatric Nurse (Regulation 683, 14 April 1989, as amended), followed by:

  • 1-Year Diploma in Midwifery (Regulation 254, 14 February 1975, as amended).

At least 2 years of experience (including community service) after registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse and Midwife.

  • The 2 years must be in primary care nursing.

Provide proof of:

  • SANC registration as a Professional Nurse or General Nurse and Midwife.
  • Employment showing primary care nursing experience.

Approval from the Nursing Service Manager (NSM) to enroll in the program.

The student must remain employed at the institution where NSM approval was granted during the training period.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Care Nursing is specifically designed to: Strengthen and deepen students’ knowledge and skills in Primary Care nursing. Develop the student’s skills based on current thinking, practice, and research methods in the field of primary care nursing. Empower students with a high level of theoretical engagement and intellectual independence to acquire the ability to relate knowledge to a range of contexts, and to undertake professional and highly skilled work in primary care nursing. This includes prevention of disease, injury, complications, screening, appropriate management, and prompt referral of patients with specific and complex health
