To become a nurse, there are minimum requirements that include essential educational, licensing, and skill prerequisites. These can vary depending on the college and the specific nursing role you aim to pursue.

The Minimum Requirements For Nursing

To become a nurse, you must meet the following requirements;

NSC Requirements

To meet the requirements for the Faculty of Health Sciences, applicants must have:

  • English: Home Language or First Additional Language at Level 4
  • Mathematics: Level 4
  • Science: Life Sciences and/or Physical Sciences at Level 4

The selection process uses a Composite Index (CI) score based on the following criteria:

Matric Academic Results: Your scores from five subjects are considered, including:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • The best of either Physical Sciences or Life Sciences
  • The two best other subjects

We evaluate the percentage achieved, not the symbol, with the average of these five subjects contributing 60% to the CI score.
 National Benchmark Test (NBT) Scores: These scores make up the remaining 40% of the CI score, based on the average achieved.

First-year

  • Introduction to Medical Sciences
  • Human Behavioural Sciences I
  • Integrated General Nursing Sciences I
  • Anatomy for Nursing Sciences I

Second-year

  • Physiology and Medical Biochemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Integrated General Nursing Sciences II

Third-year

  • Pharmacology
  • Midwifery I
  • Integrated General Nursing Sciences III

Fourth-year

  • Midwifery II
  • Integrated General Nursing Sciences IV.
