What Do You Need To Do To Become A PHC At DUT? What are the minimum requirements for nursing at DUT?

If you aspire to work in the healthcare field and specifically wish to join the Primary Health Care program at the Durban University of Technology (DUT), it’s important to understand the necessary steps to achieve your dream.

This program equips nurses with the skills necessary to work successfully in a range of environments where families’ and communities’ requirements for holistic health are combined with social and economic development. Acute care services, health promotion, and education are all included in the primary health care system. In both urban and rural areas, nurses are prepared to handle both common and urgent illnesses.

DUT’s general regulations will be followed regarding age and maturity requirements, recognition of prior learning (RPL) entrance, and work experience-based requirements for admission, international students will be admitted by General Regulations G4 and G7 (5), the DUT Admissions Policy for International Students, and the South African Nursing Council.

Minimum Admission Requirements For PHC At DUT

In addition to Rule G23A, G3, G4, and G7, applicants must be in possession of:

  • A diploma or degree in General Nursing and Midwifery or
  • Have been granted conferment of status (Rule G10A refers) or
  • Have been granted advanced standing via RPL (Rule G10B).
  • Be registered with the South African Nursing Council as a General Nurse and Midwife.
  • Have 2 years or more post-registration experience as a general nurse and midwife.
  • Have proof of professional indemnity

  • Post Graduate Diploma in Occupational Health Nursing
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Primary Care Nursing

  • Health Sciences – Certificate in High Care for Professional Nurses
  • Health Sciences – Certificate in Infection Control marketing descriptor
  • Introduction to Audiometry testing for Occupational Health setting
  • Introduction to Research Methods Nursing
  • Introduction to Spirometry testing for Occupational Health setting
  • Short course in Infection Prevention and Control
