What Does F Stand For In Pencils

The Meaning of the “F” in Pencils: A Comprehensive Guide:

Have you ever wondered what those tiny letters and numbers on your pencils meant? Grades for graphite pencils indicate how light/hard and dark/soft they are. You may have noticed the H or B grade on graphite pencils. The B represents darkness and the H stands for hardness. Because H pencils have a higher filler content and a lower graphite content, they are harder and produce lighter lines. Because they are softer and contain less filler, B-grade pencils, on the other hand, leave a darker mark.

The following is the order in which pencils are graded: 9H, 8H, 7H, 6H, 5H, 4H, 3H, 2H, H, F, HB, B, 2B, 3B, 4B, 5B, 6B, 7B, 8B, 9B, 9xB. Grades 2H through 6B are typically included in standard drawing sets because they cover the majority of the techniques you’ll need for your drawings. You may have also noticed an EE-grade pencil. Unlike graphite pencils, these have a more matte finish and produce a black mark because they are 50% charcoal and 50% graphite.

  • The F pencil grade means Fine. This pencil is hard which means that it maintains a fine point.

What Makes A Pencil Grade Harder Or Softer

The core of a graphite pencil is a mix of graphite and clay filler. H pencils contain more clay filler and are highly compacted which means they create a lighter mark and are harder.

The higher the number before the H, the harder and lighter it will be. B pencils have less clay filler and the core isn’t as compacted which makes them darker and softer. The higher the number before the B, the softer and darker it will be.

How To Use Different Pencils

While you can draw with any pencil, the brief guide that follows will show you how to use different pencil grades. Additionally, we advise you to try out and adjust the various grades in your set to see what suits you best!

  • 9H–5H: Because they are light and don’t show through the paint as much, they are excellent for creating sketches for watercolour paintings. Because water-soluble graphites dissolve in water, they are also effective for this purpose.
  • 4H-2H: These are great for technical drawings, outlines, light sketches, and guidelines because they leave a very light mark.
  • H, F, HB, and B are frequently used for basic writing and sketches. Because HB has little smudging and is sufficiently clear for writing and drawing, it is frequently used as a multipurpose pencil.
  • B grades: These pencils are perfect for shading and tonal modelling because of their softer texture and darker marks. Additionally excellent for smudging and blending are the higher B pencils.
  • EE: As mentioned earlier, EE pencils create a very dark mark with a more matte finish than graphite pencils because they’re a mix of graphite and charcoal. This makes them ideal for very dark shading and tonal modelling.

Many graphite pencil sets include a good range of basic grades that are useful for sketching, drawing technical drawings, shading, and tonal modelling. Having a variety of pencils at your disposal also helps you to try different things and discover what you enjoy. Since every person has a unique drawing style, what works for one person may not work for you. READ MORE
