JIB in Electrical: What It Stands for and Why It Matters

JIB is an abbreviation for “Joint Industry Board.” It is an important organization in the electrical sector in the United Kingdom. The JIB, or Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry, was formed to bring together diverse stakeholders in the electrical industry, including employers, employees, and unions. Its principal purpose is to promote and maintain high employment, training, and health and safety standards within the sector.

The Joint Industry Board for the Electrical Contracting Industry (“JIB”) establishes standards for the electrical contracting industry’s employment, welfare, grading, and apprentice training. The JIB oversees the industry’s collective bargaining agreement, which was negotiated by the JIB’s parties, the ECA and Unite the Union.

  • Joint Industry Board(JIB) Grading

JIB grading is used to determine the position and status of a cardholder in the electrotechnical business. To be given a JIB grade, you must demonstrate that you have the required qualifications and experience for the ECS occupation and JIB grade being sought.

JIB grading is accessible to anybody who passes the grading requirements, however, only particular jobs are linked with a JIB grade. The JIB Grade entitles you to the terms and conditions of work associated with that grade under a nationally recognized collective agreement between industry employers and employees.

The contract covers salary rates, travel/subsistence payments, health insurance, and other work benefits. If you work for a JIB, you will require your employer’s approval when submitting your grading application.

JIB Grading Levels

The JIB grading levels help both employers and clients understand an electrician’s competence and what types of work they are qualified to perform. Each grade is created by a person’s professional role, tasks, and responsibilities. JIB grades include the following;

  • Core Grade

To obtain the Core Grade, you must have completed a formal apprenticeship and possess the industry NVQ Level 3 suitable to the occupation against which you seek to be assessed.

  • Approved Grade

The Approved Grade indicates that the cardholder has attained the Core Grade and has taken on the extra duties after at least two years of experience. Typically, an Approved grade will entail monitoring of additional team members on a project. To advance to the Approved Grade, extra training is necessary.

  • Technician Level

The Technician Grade shows that the operator is operating at a supervisory level and has advanced technical skills. Before applying for the Technician Grade, the Approved Grade must have been held for at least five years, with at least three years in a supervisory position.

To be promoted to the Technician Grade, an applicant must demonstrate further skills and abilities in both technical and management aspects of the company’s operations.

JIB in the electrical industry ensures that electrical work is carried out safely, efficiently, and to high standards. The JIB organization’s efforts to set industry standards, oversee training, and promote fair employment conditions not only benefit electrical workers but also the clients who rely on their services.
