Academic Requirements and Grades required for studying Engineering

The list below shows the grades required for studying Engineering:

Minimum matric requirements (NSS or IEB)

  • Mathematics: Minimum of 70%
  • Physical Science: Minimum of 70%
  • Language: Minimum of 60% for Afrikaans or English (the language of tuition)
  • APS Score: Minimum of 34
  • Exemption: Gr. 12 exemption

N1 Certificate

  • Passed Grade 12 (with Mathematics) or
  • Passed Grade 11 (with Mathematics) or
  • Passed Grade 10 (with relevant technical subjects) or
  • Passed Grade 10 (with Mathematics) or
  • Passed Grade 9 (with Mathematics and Physical Science)

N2 Certificate

  • Passed N1 with 4 subjects on the same level or
  • Passed Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science) or
  • Passed Grade 11 (with relevant technical subjects) or
  • Passed NC(V) Level 2 (all subjects) or
  • Mechanical Engineering – If a student does not have Drawing subjects at the school level, he/she must start with an N1 certificate
  • Civil Engineering – If a student does not have Civil subjects at the school level, he/she must start with an N1 certificate

N3 Certificate

  • Passed N2 with 4 subjects on the same level or
  • Passed Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science & 1 relevant technical subject) or
  • Passed NC(V) Level 3 (all subjects) or
  • Mechanical Engineering – If a student does not have Drawing subjects at the school level, he/she must start with an N1 certificate
  • Civil Engineering – If a student does not have Civil subjects at the school level, he/she must start with an N1 certificate

N4 Certificate

  • Passed N3 with 4 subjects on the same level or
  • Passed Grade 12 (with Mathematics and Physical Science & 2 relevant technical subjects) or
  • Passed NC(V) Level 4 (all subjects)

N5 Certificate

  • Passed N4 with 4 subjects on the same level

N6 Certificate

  • Passed N5 with 4 subjects on the same level
