What Happens If You Fail Matric

Failing Matric can feel like a huge setback, but it’s important to remember that it is not the end of the road. If you or your child did not pass Matric, don’t lose hope; there are many paths forward. Life after a Matric failure can be tough, especially for young people who might start believing that a bright future is out of reach. As parents, guardians, or loved ones, it’s crucial to offer encouragement and reassurance. Remind your child that setbacks happen to everyone, and what truly matters is how we move forward from them. One of the first things to know is that there are options available for learners who failed Matric. For example, you can choose to rewrite the subjects you didn’t pass, giving yourself another chance to achieve a pass mark and earn your Matric Certificate.

Another route is to upgrade your results by writing supplementary exams or enrolling in adult matric programs offered by various institutions. These paths may require extra time and effort, but they are possible, and many students successfully earn their certificate this way. It’s also important to let your child know that they can still study further and build a career, even without a traditional Matric Certificate. Several vocational courses, learnerships, and skills programs accept students who have not passed Matric. These programs focus on developing practical skills that can lead to meaningful employment and a fulfilling career.

Many people who did not pass Matric have gone on to achieve great things by following alternative education and career opportunities.Failing Matric is a temporary hurdle that can be overcome with the right support and determination. Encourage your child to keep believing in themselves, to seek out their options, and to take positive action. With the right mindset and guidance, they can still build a successful future, proving that one moment does not define their lifelong potential.

What Happens If You Don’t Pass Matric?

  • No Matric Certificate: The most immediate consequence of failing Matric is that you will not receive a National Senior Certificate (NSC). This certificate is a standard qualification for entry into higher education institutions and many job opportunities.
  • Limited Higher Education Options: Without a Matric certificate, your options for pursuing further education at universities and colleges are limited. Most degree programs require a Matric certificate for admission.
  • Limited Job Opportunities: Many employers require job applicants to have a Matric certificate as a minimum qualification. Failing Matric may limit your options in the job market and affect your earning potential
  • Delay in Career Plans: Failing Matric can delay your career plans, as you may need to retake the exams or pursue alternative educational pathways.

What To Do If You Fail Matric

The following options are available to students who passed their matriculation but didn’t receive the desired or necessary marks to be admitted to degree study:

  • Study Without Matric: Many courses, like short courses and ICB programs, don’t need a Matric certificate. These help you learn skills for jobs or starting a business.
  • Adult Matric Course: If you’re 21 or older, the Adult Matric course lets you earn a Matric Certificate and prepare for college or work. If you’re younger, you can rewrite exams or redo Matric at school.
  • Remark, Recheck, View Paper: If you feel your exam marks were wrong, you can ask for your paper to be remarked, rechecked, or viewed to understand mistakes. Fees apply.
  • Supplementary Exam: You can rewrite failed subjects in a supplementary exam—also called the Second Chance Programme—to get your Matric Certificate.
  • Have Your Exam Papers Remarked: If you want to improve your Matric results, you can request a remark. Sometimes examiners make mistakes when marking or adding up marks. A remark means your paper is carefully marked again to make sure every question is graded correctly and the right marks are given.
  • Have Your Exam Papers Rechecked: With a recheck, an examiner carefully goes through your paper to make sure there are no errors in marking or mark allocation. This process can sometimes help increase your marks.
  • View Your Exam Paper: If your paper has already been remarked or rechecked, you can request to view it yourself. This helps you understand how your exam was marked and check if the marking was done properly.

You can apply for a remark, recheck, or view your paper through the Department of Basic Education’s e-Services website or at your nearest District Education office. The current fees are:

  1. Remark: R104 per subject
  2. Recheck: R25 per subject
  3. View Paper: R200 per subject

(Be aware that fees may change, so check the official website for the latest information.)
