If you’re applying for a course or qualification, you may have encountered terms like N4, N5, and N6. But what exactly do these levels mean? These terms are part of the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), primarily used in South Africa, and they categorize various levels of vocational and technical education.

N4, N5, and N6 are simply the qualifications offered at technical colleges that prepare students with specialized skills for specific industries. Understanding these levels is very important when considering further education or career development. Each level builds on the one before, with N4 being the entry point and N6 being more advanced. Completing these qualifications can open up job opportunities and enhance your professional expertise.

Within the TVET Educational system, the N4, N5, and N6 levels indicate different phases of vocational education. These levels are often related to National Certificates and are available in a variety of sectors such as engineering, business studies, and hospitality.

  • What Is NATED Qualification?

NATED qualifications (National Accredited Technical Education Diploma) are a series of vocational and technical qualifications available in South Africa. They are largely given through TVET colleges and are an important component of the country’s education and training system.

NATED qualifications are intended to provide students with practical skills and information that will make them highly employable in a variety of sectors. These qualifications are offered at different stages; N1-N6, to equip students in their chosen specializations.

  • What Is N4 Qualification?

The first level or course in any NATED program is an N4 qualification. It enables students to master the fundamentals of their chosen subject. Because the DHET designed N4 courses with a unique aim and learning procedures, they are not comparable to any other qualification. This course takes 6 to 12 months to complete and offers 60 credits. Only after completing level N4 will you be able to study for the NATED N5 Certificate, and once completed, you will be eligible to study for the NATED N6 Certificate. Students who have achieved their National N4 certificate can continue their studies at the following level, which is N5, and eventually N6.

NB: This qualification is not a degree qualification but a National Certificate.
