Importance of Grade 12 Results:
High school results carry substantial weight in UCT’s admission decision. A strong academic background showcases a student’s potential and capability to excel in university-level studies. UCT considers Grade 12 results, particularly in subjects relevant to the chosen field of study, as indicators of a student’s academic prowess.
UCT’s Minimum Admission Requirements:
While UCT appreciates a well-rounded application, they do have minimum admission requirements. Generally, prospective undergraduate students need to meet the following criteria:
- National Senior Certificate (NSC): Applicants must have a valid NSC or equivalent qualification.
- Subjects and Levels: Specific subject requirements and minimum levels in certain subjects may vary based on the chosen degree program.
- Minimum APS (Admission Point Score): UCT calculates an APS based on a student’s Grade 12 results. Meeting the minimum APS is essential for consideration.
Calculating Admissions Points Score (APS) For UCT Admission
The percentages achieved in National Senior Certificate examinations (preliminary and final examinations) will be allocated an admission score equal to that percentage.
The sum of 6 subjects, excluding Life Orientation, but including English and any required subject(s) for the relevant program, is considered when deciding on admission. For example, for a given program where Maths and Physical Sciences are required, we will take scores for English, Maths, Physical Sciences and the next best 3 subjects other than Life Orientation to compute the NSC score towards the APS. Results below 40% for any subject do not attract a score.
