UJ Teaching Requirements: How Many Points Do You Need?

If you are considering a career in teaching and want to study at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), understanding the admission requirements is an important first step. UJ’s Bachelor of Education (BEd) program prepares students to teach across various phases, including the Foundation Phase, the Intermediate Phase, and Senior Phase and FET. To qualify for entry into most BEd programs at UJ, you need a minimum APS (Admission Points Score) of 28, not counting Life Orientation. This score is calculated using your best six matric subjects, and certain subjects are weighted more heavily depending on the phase and specialization you choose.

In addition to the overall APS, you also need to meet subject-specific requirements. According to the UJ Faculty of Education Admission Information, applicants must achieve at least Level 4 (50%–59%) in English, whether it is taken as Home Language or First Additional Language. However, some programs, such as the BEd in Foundation Phase Teaching, set higher standards. For this course, you must have a minimum of 28 APS, 60% or more in English, and at least 40% in Mathematics or 60% in Mathematical Literacy.

These requirements ensure that students are prepared for the academic demands of teacher training and the practical responsibilities of the profession. If you meet or exceed these standards, you will have a strong chance of being accepted into UJ’s teaching programs and starting your journey toward a meaningful career in education.

What Is APS and How Is It Calculated?

APS stands for Admission Points Score, and it is used by universities like UJ to assess your eligibility based on your final matric results. Your APS is calculated by adding the points you earn from your six best National Senior Certificate (NSC) subjects. Each subject is given a score based on your percentage. If you score between 80% and 100%, you earn 7 points.

A score between 70% and 79% gives you 6 points. For 60% to 69%, you get 5 points. If you score between 50% and 59%, you earn 4 points. A mark between 40% and 49% gives you 3 points, while 30% to 39% gives you 2 points. Anything below 30% earns just 1 point. To calculate your total APS, you add the points from your six best subjects. In some cases, Life Orientation may not be counted in this total.
