In South Africa, the education system is renowned for its diverse options and pathways for students. The National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations are the culmination of a student’s high school journey, and the grading system is often a topic of confusion. Generally, 17 points may fall short for many programs, as requirements often range higher depending on the institution and field of study.

Required Points For Diploma Course

The pass levels and their APS requirements are as follows:

19 points

Bachelor’s Degree pass (also known as an exemption)—23 points
Diploma pass – 19 points.
Higher Certificate pass – 15 points

Diploma Pass 19 Aps Points Calculation

Students will need at least 19 APS points to get a diploma pass.

3 APS points for home language
3 APS points in four high-credit subjects
2 APS points in two other subjects

This means they will need to get

At least 40-49% in the home language
40-49% in four other high-credit subjects
30-39% in two other subjects

How To Obtain A Diploma Pass

You can fail one topic and still receive a diploma if you receive 40% in four subjects with higher credits and 30% in three subjects with lesser credits. With this pass, you can register for a diploma degree at a university of technology or a bridging course at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college.

A student must pass the diploma exam to:

Pass 6 of the 7 subjects offered
Of which 4 Subjects must be at least a 40% (level 3) achievement
Subjects include Home Language at 40% Compulsory Pass /excluding Life Orientation
